Weapons director Zach Cregger recently opened up about whether he’s leaving the horror genre after his upcoming Resident Evil movie. In a recent interview, he shared his thoughts on the genre and how it ties to his personal life. The question has emerged since the announcement of his upcoming sci-fi movie, Flood, which he is currently set to direct after Resident Evil.
Zach Cregger doesn’t have ‘any plans to’ shift from making horror movies
In an interview with Collider, Zach Cregger shared his thoughts on making more horror movies. Cregger was asked whether he worried about being pigeonholed as a “horror guy,” drawing a parallel with Ari Aster’s career.
“No. Well, I mean, we’re just, I suppose we’re different in that regard, where I, I mean, I think Ari loves horror, so don’t get me wrong. I don’t think he thinks there’s any sort of stigma,” Cregger explained. “I don’t see a career in horror as a means to an end, you know. Maybe I’ll make a movie that’s not a horror movie one day. That’d be totally fine with me,” Cregger shared.
He further emphasized he’ll continue to use horror elements even if he’s not making a horror movie. “I don’t have any plans to, you know, like even, you know, Flood is a sci-fi movie, but it’s got heavy horror elements to it,” the Barbarian director revealed. “I just like horror stuff, and I like really dark, scary stuff. That’s my favorite thing,” he shared.
“And so it would be kind of weird if I went against my own nature,” Cregger admitted. He also admitted that the market is currently open to horror movies, which gave him a breakthrough in his career. And since his interests align with the current market interests, he’ll continue to make more horror movies.
Cregger later shared how, despite being a generally happy person, he gravitates towards horror elements. “The stuff I listen to to fall asleep is nightmare fuel, like just straight up evil. And you know what? It puts a smile on my face. And I don’t have any evil intent toward anybody, but that soothes me, man.”
