On Thread, when a fan asked about how much of Flanagan’s story would be kept in the movie, Gunn cleared up the confusion by confirming that they didn’t change the Doctor Sleep filmmaker’s story for the Clayface adaptation. He clarified that the new writer was only brought in to make minor changes to the project’s shooting script.
“It’s all Mike’s story. That’s WHY we’re making this movie, because we loved it. Any changes as the shooting script is finalized are minor. I’m a Flanafan myself,” Gunn wrote.

The Clayface movie will be directed by Speak No Evil director James Watkins from a screenplay written by Mike Flanagan. The adaptation will be led by Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries (The Gentlemen, Kandahar) as the titular DC character, who is a fan-favorite Batman villain that has shapeshifting abilities, first created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane for DC Comics. The adaptation will reportedly center around “a Hollywood horror tale centering on a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant.” Production will be later this year in the UK.
The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 11, 2026, as part of the DC Universe’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters saga.
