The Rise of Skywalker’s Early Box Office Tracking Is Here

Unsurprisingly, the latest Star Wars movie, The Rise of Skywalker should be a huge holiday hit for Lucasfilm. Via The Hollywood Reporter, the early box office estimates have it set to make between $175 to $200 million.

That would be on par with previous estimates for the last two Star Wars films, although it would be a lower opening weekend. In 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens made $248 million when it arrived. Two years later, Star Wars: The Last Jedi made $220 million domestically in its first weekend.

One reason for the lower numbers could be competition. A week prior to the arrival of The Rise of Skywalker, Jumanji: The Next Level will hit theaters. It is projected to open just as strong as Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle did in 2017. Another reason may be the “volatile state of the box office,” even though Disney is doing pretty well with Frozen 2 and most of its other sequels this year.

The Rise of Skywalker shouldn’t have any trouble clearing the $1 billion mark worldwide. It’s just a matter of seeing how much staying power it has through the holidays.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens on December 20.
