Why Spider-Man: Brand New Day Has So Many Villains Revealed

A new Spider-Man: Brand New Day update answers the question of why the upcoming fourth entry in the MCU’s Spider-Man film series features so many villains.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is rumored to feature at least five villains in a single film. Having one or two villains in a superhero movie is totally normal to keep the story going. In fact, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is also no stranger to battling at least more than one villain. But a total of five? That’s quite a stretch for a single film.

Why does Spider-Man: Brand New Day have so many villains?

In a recent Q&A session on The Cosmic Circus, insider Alex Perez — known for providing scoops related to upcoming Marvel Studios projects — was asked who the main villain will be in the upcoming Spider-Man installment and whether more villains can be expected. Perez then revealed that Mr. Negative, a character rumored to be appearing in the film, is not in the movie.

“When I shared the article detailing a samurai-based character and an Asian-based villain, which was later confirmed by the Spider-Man costume department’s Pinterest board, it was not intended to confirm Mr. Negative’s appearance in this movie, but rather that of another character entirely. Do I know who it is? No. But I don’t think they’re the main villain of the film,” said Perez.

Perez also addressed why Spider-Man: Brand New Day has multiple villains, saying that those villains are meant to be a part of the upcoming film’s opening montage. Perez added: “The idea behind the multiple side villains that we’re seeing reported by multiple scoopers isn’t because scoopers are confused. A good majority of those villains being reported are meant to be a part of an opening montage similar to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, where we would see Spider-Man take on these villains over the years since No Way Home, and we’ll see how with each passing battle, Peter would upgrade his suit, reaching the one we see in Brand New Day.”

Instead of Jon Watts, who had helmed the first three Spider-Man features starring Holland (Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home), Shang-Chi’s Destin Daniel Cretton takes the director’s chair this time. Additional cast members have yet to be announced.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a part of Phase Six of the MCU, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 31, 2025.
