Blade writer David S. Goyer has finally shared his reaction to Marvel Studios‘ long-delayed MCU adaptation of the fan-favorite Daywalker. Goyer not only wrote the scripts for the original Blade trilogy, but he also wrote several superhero movies, including Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.
It has already been six years since Kevin Feige announced the surprise casting of Mahershala Ali as the MCU’s Blade. Up until now, the project has remained in development after going through multiple director changes. Despite this, the Oscar winner is reportedly still attached to play the anti-hero, which he briefly played at the end of 2021’s Eternals as a voice cameo. While Ali’s official debut remains in limbo, the character Blade made its MCU debut last year in Deadpool & Wolverine with Wesley Snipes reprising his iconic role.
Blade writer reacts to MCU movie delay & Deadpool & Wolverine cameo
During a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, when asked about the Blade MCU movie delay, Goyer revealed that he doesn’t understand why Marvel Studios is having a difficult time adapting the vampire hero’s story to the screen. He believes that making a new Blade movie shouldn’t be complicated since he has a simple story.
“I don’t either, because in my mind, I think Blade is a relatively simple story. It’s not complicated,” Goyer said. “I always think when you embark on a movie like this, you have to distil down what the promise of the movie [is].”
He continued, “The promise of a new Blade is that it should have insane ass kicking, it should be pretty scary, might be R-Rated, and it should not be complicated. It should be a simple story. So, I don’t know why it’s been so hard. I have no idea why. I’m baffled. Mahershala Ali is an amazing actor. I don’t know why.”
In addition, Goyer also shared his thoughts regarding Snipes’ surprise cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine. He admitted that even though it was cool to see Snipes’ Blade again, he feels that his cameo might not have been the best idea, especially when trying to introduce a new version of the hero.
“I thought that was cool too,” Goyer said, “but it’s confusing also if you’re trying to do another one.”
