After months of speculation, Marvel Studios has cast its first member of the upcoming X-Men reboot, with a new actor to play Emma Frost. The official casting will be a surprise to fans who were following rumors of Emily Rudd, Sydney Sweeney, and Margot Robbie competing for the role.
According to Deadline’s latest report, Marvel has cast Samara Weaving as Emma Frost in its X-Men film. The casting came after the final list of actors auditioned for the role earlier in July. Director Jake Schreier and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige reportedly chose Weaving earlier this week.
Weaving will be the second actor to play Frost in live-action, following January Jones in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. Frost’s mutation allows her to turn her skin into a diamond form, as well as use telepathic abilities similar to Professor X.
Weaving most recently starred in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, which grossed over $42 million at the box office, and Over Your Dead Body. Her previous film, Carolina Caroline, earned critical acclaim.
What else do we know about Marvel’s X-Men reboot movie?
Marvel Studios has been tight-lipped regarding its X-Men reboot, but some key details have slipped out over the years. Feige has been vocal about the next phase of the MCU focusing heavily on mutants, with rumors suggesting that the X-Men will be played by younger actors. The film will be directed by Schreier, who also helmed 2025’s Thunderbolts.
The upcoming film is expected to be set after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. As such, the film may not arrive until 2028, though Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce a release date. While a new X-Men cast is being formed, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds previously confirmed that the character will return in a new movie.
Before the reboot, cast members of the previous X-Men movies will reunite in Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
