Following Andor’s chart-topping Season 2, creator Tony Gilroy addressed ongoing speculation about a possible Season 3 and whether he might return to the Star Wars universe in the future. Further, Gilroy reflected on the production, the response to the show, and what additional seasons might have explored.
Tony Gilroy on what story he would have explored if Andor had more seasons
Gilroy clarified that Andor was always designed as a two-season series, and even in a scenario where more seasons, such as Season 3, were possible, the story itself would not have changed. “I wouldn’t tell the story any differently at all,” he told GamesRadar+.
He acknowledged that a longer run was theoretically possible under different circumstances. “If we were working on season one and I was 35 and Diego was 35 and we had unlimited time, and if Disney had the money, and someone said, ‘Geez, can you do it in four [seasons]?’ You’d build a frame for four that would work,” Gilroy noted.
Still, he stressed that the compressed storytelling approach of Season 2 became creatively energizing. “It’s really hard to tell people who aren’t writers how exciting it is to work on something in that structure, where we have all that negative space… really exciting,” he stated.
Tony Gilroy on whether he will return to Star Wars franchise
As for a potential return to Star Wars, Tony Gilroy said he is unsure whether that day will come. He shared that time, rather than money or opportunity, is the major factor influencing his decision-making now. “I really don’t know. I’m certainly not in the front half of the book, so time is an issue for me: what I get to work on, and how much time I have to do it,” he revealed.
Gilroy added that financial offers would not sway him, explaining that he has worked to reach a place where “a blank check isn’t going to change my life in any kind of way.” Interestingly, he admitted that the biggest pull back to another Star Wars project would not be the franchise itself but the chance to work in London again. “London would be the bigger draw than Star Wars. It’s crazy that’s true!”
For now, it seems Gilroy is not looking to make Andor Season 3 and is subjectively open to returning to the Star Wars franchise.
