Directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently spoke with Josh Horowitz about Avengers: Doomsday. The filmmaking duo discussed how the upcoming MCU film connects to its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, while also reflecting on standout moments from production.
Horowitz asked the Russos directly whether Doomsday will end on a cliffhanger similar to Avengers: Infinity War. Joe Russo confirmed the two films share a narrative connection but clarified they function differently. “We definitely have thought about them and conceived them as a for to speak to one another, you know, not in the exact same way that Infinity War and Endgame did,” Joe said.
The directors also opened up about working with legacy cast members during filming. Anthony Russo highlighted the experience of directing Ian McKellen as Magneto on set. “To be able to step foot on a stage with Ian McKellen playing Magneto was like, I mean, I was, you know, we were fanboys of him playing that character before we were directors,” he said. Anthony also noted the film carries the weight of 25 years of Marvel history, tracing back to the original X-Men in 2000.
Horowitz then pressed the duo about Battleworld and whether it would appear in Doomsday or Secret Wars. Joe Russo played coy with his response. “We won’t confirm or deny whether Battle World appears in either of these films,” he said. Joe added that the team could not reveal which characters would appear on Battleworld if it were featured.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
