The Star Wars series Andor is coming to a close with Season 2, and not making a Season 3, 4, or 5. It is a decision that surprised many fans who expected more. While the original plan envisioned five seasons, the creators opted to wrap the story up sooner, but why? Here are all the details.
Why Andor isn’t getting Season 3, 4, and 5 as originally planned
When Tony Gilroy first pitched Andor to Disney, he imagined an epic five-season show charting the final five years of Cassian Andor’s life. Each season would cover one year. This would eventually lead straight into the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, where Cassian’s arc ends with a heroic sacrifice. The idea was ambitious, perhaps too much so, according to the creators.
As production on Andor Season 1 unfolded, Gilroy began to feel the weight of that commitment to making Seasons 3, 4, and 5. In an interview with Empire, he admitted, “Oh my God, we are going to have to come up with another 12 hours of story?” That pressure led him to reconsider the plan. Over a quiet drink with lead actor Diego Luna, the duo agreed that two seasons would be enough.
The decision not to make Season 3 wasn’t due to a lack of story. Andor explores some of the most mature and resonant themes in the Star Wars franchise. But practical realities played a role. The show’s production is massive, spanning real-world locations, high-end effects, and an enormous time commitment. Even getting two seasons made has taken over five years.
As Gilroy explained at Star Wars Celebration 2024, he’s proud of what he accomplished. He feels it’s time to move on: “I think it’s time for me to go do something else… I feel good about that. And right now I’d like to leave it like that.” (via Screenrant)
Even though fans are not getting Andor Season 3, 4, and 5, the Season 2 episode arcs leave gaps and room for expansion. Diego Luna and Adria Arjona have expressed interest in exploring more, possibly through spinoffs or other formats.
