Lucasfilm May Have Shelved Star Wars Movie of Beloved Character

UPDATE 5/20: According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, the movie has not been shelved. More details here.

With Lucasfilm continuing to put films on the back burner after announcing them, a recent rumor suggests that the upcoming Daisy Ridley-led Star Wars movie about Rey has become the latest victim of this practice. Set to be helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the untitled flick was originally supposed to build upon Rey’s story following the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, according to a current rumor, fans might have to wait for a bit longer to see the film.

Daisy Ridley’s Rey Star Wars movie possibly shelved but not canceled

Renowned scooper Daniel Richtman claimed that Lucasfilm has decided to shelve the much-awaited Rey Star Wars movie for an undisclosed period.

In his latest Patreon update, Richtman noted that the said film, which was first announced at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration event, has been put “on hold once again.” However, the entertainment insider also confirmed that Lucasfilm has not canceled Daisy Ridley’s Rey Star Wars movie. It has only halted development on the project on a temporary basis.

This is because Disney intends to prioritize Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, which stars Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth in leading roles, as well as James Mangold’s forthcoming Star Wars feature, claims Richtman.

As such, the Rey movie joins a long list of Star Wars films that have failed to make it out of the production phase despite receiving official confirmation from Lucasfilm. The said projects include Rogue Squadron, the Donald Glover-led Lando film, and Taika Waititi’s untitled Star Wars movie. This also includes Dave Filoni’s Star Wars film, which supposedly would have bridged the gap between The Mandalorian and Ahsoka universes, Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy, and Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars Trilogy. None of the projects listed above has received a positive update in recently.

With Daisy Ridley’s Rey movie reportedly getting shelved, the current theatrical schedule for Star Wars films includes The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will hit theaters on May 22, 2026. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Starfighter, which comes out in theaters on May 28, 2027.
