Star Wars: Kathleen Kennedy Teases More Stand-alone Movies Like Starfighter

Kathleen Kennedy is teasing the future of the Star Wars franchise.

The next theatrically released Star Wars movie will be The Mandalorian and Grogu, which serves as a continuation of the popular Disney+ The Mandalorian series. That movie is being directed by Jon Favreau and is currently scheduled to arrive in May 2026.

After that, Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter arrives in 2027. Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth will star in the film, which is set after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. A number of other Star Wars movies are also in development; however, none of them have release dates at this time.

What did Kathleen Kennedy say about making more Star Wars movies?

Star Wars fans need not fear that the franchise is coming to an end, though, as Kathleen Kennedy says they intend to make more stand-alone Star Wars movies like Starfighter in the near future.

She said, via Variety, “I really think that now we’re in a position where it’s broadened the possibility of stories and filmmakers we can bring in to tell stories that mean something to them – it doesn’t necessarily have to connect to every little thing that’s been done in Star Wars; it can actually be a stand-alone story that then builds into many many other stories.”

Whether this means that Lucasfilm will continue to develop or fast-track any of the other Star Wars movies that are already being developed — be it the stand-alone Rey movie, the Dave Filoni film, Lando, Taika Waititi’s movie, or another title — of if they’re looking at brand-new projects to announce remains unclear at this time.

Star Wars: Starfighter, however, currently has a May 28, 2027 release date. The screenplay is being written by Jonathan Tropper, who previously worked with Levy on 2014’s This Is Where I Leave You and 2022’s The Adam Project.
