A new Star Wars detail has come to light that may change how Daisy Ridley’s New Jedi Order film will play out. Madeleine Roux’s new novel, Star Wars: Legacy, adds new story details that could change how fans view the sequel trilogy. The book takes place between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, following Rey and Leia on a quest to repair Rey’s lightsaber.
During their quest, Rey and Leia visit the planet Tython and retrieve several holotapes and recordings of ancient lectures from the Old Jedi era (via The Holo Files). The items contain knowledge of the Jedi Order previously believed to have been destroyed when Luke’s temple was burned down in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. However, Rey also makes another key observation that could pave the way for how she wants to rebuild the Jedi Order.
Why does the Star Wars lore change impact Daisy Ridley’s Rey movie?
Throughout the book, Rey struggles with how the Jedi Order can be restored. At one point, she mentions how one of the key tenets of the Order may be flawed. “Jedi were taught to let go of all attachments, but everyone needs something to fight for, and more than just ideas, people,” Rey tells Leia.
The Jedi tenet of abandoning all worldly attachments is part of what led Anakin Skywalker down the dark path of becoming Darth Vader in the prequel trilogy. With Rey’s new comments, among others, the book suggests that she wants to build a new Jedi Order with new tenets. If Disney and Lucasfilm follow through with the ideas presented in the book, Rey’s Star Wars film may see the next generation of Jedi allowed to form relationships with their partners and have children.
It remains to be seen whether these ideas will make their way into Star Wars: New Jedi Order. The film was announced in 2023, though development has progressed slowly. Ridley recently said that the film will be worth the wait.
Until then, fans can look forward to more Star Wars in 2027’s Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, which takes place following the sequel trilogy.
