Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Recruits Jason O’Mara as the New Director of SHIELD

The season finale of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD had some startling revelations, one of them being that Phil Coulson was no longer the director of the titular agency. Now, Marvel Entertainment has announced who his successor will be on the series with the casting of Jason O’Mara (The Good WifeVegas) as the mysterious character. Though unnamed, Marvel teases that the character’s roots in Marvel Comics go back all the way to the 1940s.

“Bringing Jason into the mix as the New Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. forces everyone, particularly Coulson, to reevaluate their role in the Agency,” said Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb. “Jason has both the physical presence and acting dynamics that will connect with and challenge even the most loyal agent.”

O’Mara is no stranger to comic book roles, having provided the voice for Batman in six DC animated movies plus the upcoming Justice League Dark. He will next be seen in the film Jadotville, coming soon to Netflix, in which he starred opposite Jamie Dornan.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD stars Clark Gregg as Director Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Agent Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Nick Blood as Agent Lance Hunter, Adrianne Palicki as Agent Bobbi Morse, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie and Luke Mitchell as Lincoln Campbell. The new season will also feature the debut of Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes aka the most recent incarnation of Ghost Rider, marking the MCU debut of the spirit of vengeance.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD returns Tuesday, September 20 in its new timeslot, 10:00 PM ET on ABC.
