A new rumor regarding the future of the Star Wars franchise has emerged online.
The most recent Star Wars movie was Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which came out in 2019. While there have been a number of Disney+ television shows released after that, fans of George Lucas’ world won’t return to a galaxy far, far away while sitting in a movie theater until May 2026, when Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu comes out.
After that, Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter starring Ryan Gosling comes out in May 2027. A number of other films are in various stages of development, though none of them have release dates at this time.
What is the new Star Wars rumor?
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, via Cosmic Marvel on Twitter, Lucasfilm plans to create a Star Wars: New Jedi Order era that will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
This era will “be similar to the Mandoverse” and will “gradually build towards a major event that brings together characters introduced in past films.” According to Ritchman, this era will begin with the upcoming Daisy Ridley Rey movie.
This is just a rumor at this time and should be taken with a grain of salt, as this has not been officially confirmed by Lucasfilm.
It is known that Ms. Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has been tapped to direct a movie featuring Rey that will take place about 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker and will see Ridley’s character construct a new Jedi Order. That movie was officially announced in April 2023 and has seen a number of writers depart the project, with George Nolfi having been tapped to write the screenplay in January 2025.
The Mandoverse, meanwhile, so far includes The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, all of which Dave Filoni has been involved with. The Mandalorian and Grogu continue the story of The Mandalorian, while a second season of Ahsoka is also in the works. Filoni is supposedly working on a movie that will connect these storylines; although, that was also announced in 2023, and there have been few to no updates about it since then.
