DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has explained why bringing Wonder Woman to the DC Universe will be easier than it will be for Batman.
With Superman set to hit theaters in July, Gunn has begun turning his attention to the rest of the DC Trinity. New solo movies for both Batman and Wonder Woman are now confirmed for the DCU.
While speaking with Rolling Stone to promote Superman, Gunn explained that Batman is “incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So outside of the stuff that I’m doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts.”
The DCU Batman movie, currently titled The Brave and the Bold, was announced back in January 2023 as part of the initial slate reveal for DC Studios. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, wasn’t officially confirmed until earlier this month by Gunn.
Why does James Gunn think Wonder Woman is an easier movie to make than Batman?
Gunn says he will have a simpler time bringing one hero to the big screen, explaining that Wonder Woman not having as many live-action portrayals as Batman makes her easier to bring into the DCU. “Wonder Woman I think is actually easier for me, because there haven’t been so many infinite portrayals of Wonder Woman — definitely not in movies, but really anywhere — that there have been of Batman. Every single Batman story has been told,” Gunn noted.
A third Wonder Woman movie starring Gal Gadot was initially in development following the release of Wonder Woman 1984, but was scrapped once Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-CEOs of the studio. While a screenwriter is working on the character’s DCU reboot, Gunn has not publicly shared who it is.
In addition to a new Wonder Woman movie, DC Studios is developing a Game of Thrones-style prequel set on the island of Themyscira before the birth of Diana Prince. The series will focus on the darkness, drama, and political intrigue behind this society of only women.
The Brave and the Bold and the untitled Wonder Woman movie remain undated by DC Studios at this time.
