Superman star Nathan Fillion recently shared with his fans how much it means to him to be able to portray Green Lantern in James Gunn’s DC Universe.
In a new post on Instagram, Fillion shared a photo of the recent gift he received from a close friend, a near-mint condition copy of Green Lantern #59. The issue is notable for featuring the first appearance of Guy Gardner, the superhero he portrays in the DCU, beginning with Superman.
“Being a part of the new Superman movie is a dream beyond my wildest. I collected comics as a kid. Imagine telling that young boy that as an adult, he’d be flying around with Superman, wielding the power of a Green Lantern! I’m so fortunate, not only to be enjoying this childhood vision realized, but also to have wonderful friends who support and celebrate these joys along with me,” Gunn wrote in the post’s caption. “One of them was kind enough to gift me with Guy Gardner’s first appearance back in March of 1968, never touched by human hands. What a rare treasure- both the comic, and you, Bill Roe. You sure know how to make a fella feel special. Love ya.”

Superman isn’t Nathan Fillion’s first time playing a Green Lantern
Superman may serve as Fillion’s first live-action appearance as a Green Lantern, but the actor has been part of the cosmic superhero’s storied history for over a decade now. The fan-favorite actor has voiced Green Lantern Corps member Hal Jordan in countless DC animated films, including Green Lantern: Emerald Knights (2011), Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013), Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (2015), and The Death of Superman (2018).
The upcoming Gunn-directed superhero blockbuster also marks Fillion’s first time playing a Green Lantern who isn’t Hal Jordan. However, fans will quickly get used to Fillion as Guy Gardner, as the actor is confirmed to be reprising the Green Lantern role in two more DCU projects: Peacemaker Season 2 and Lanterns. The latter will introduce the Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan to the DCU, played by Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, respectively.
Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, as the first DCU movie.
