Star Wars franchise star John Boyega recently backed up J.J. Abrams’ previous claim that Finn was trying to tell Rey that he was a Jedi during the sand scene in The Rise of Skywalker.
During a panel at the recent C2E2 event in Chicago, Boyega confirmed that the scene was intended to reveal to Star Wars fans that Finn was force-sensitive. This development wouldn’t have been all that surprising, given that marketing for Star Wars: The Force Awakens featured Finn holding a lightsaber. Abrams had previously shared this detail following Episode IX’s release, although some fans hadn’t believed the director, thinking that he was covering his tracks due to the movie’s poor reception.
What did Star Wars sequel trilogy star John Boyega reveal about Finn?
“I mean, I did try to tell Rey before I went down. There was a couple takes where I just said it, ‘[shouts] I’m a Jedi.’ There was a couple, but it was good to tease it. I wanted to say it when they’re going down into the quicksand,” Boyega shared during the C2E2 panel.
Unfortunately, the words “I’m a Jedi” did not make the final cut of The Rise of Skywalker. Instead, the scene shown in the theatrical cut has Finn yelling, “Rey, I never told you…,” before being sucked under the sand. Despite being rescued later on, Finn makes no attempt during the remainder of the movie to tell Rey that he’s a Jedi.

It’s unclear if fans will ever see Finn again in the Star Wars universe, given that Boyega has gone back and forth on whether he’s interested in acting in the franchise again. While Daisy Ridley shared back in May 2024 that she would “of course” want Boyega to be part of her upcoming Star Wars return, the actor has expressed some hesitation due to his mixed feelings on Finn’s story arc in the sequel trilogy.
However, Boyega could find himself back on the Disney lot, but in a different franchise, as the actor also shared at C2E2 that he’d be down to play the time-traveling mutant Bishop in an X-Men reboot. The actor also confirmed that he had spoken with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in the past about possibly joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although at the time he didn’t have an answer for the studio head on who he wanted to play.
The Star Wars sequel trilogy is streaming on Disney+.
