Jordan Vogt-Roberts Will Direct Netflix’s Live-Action Gundam Film

The mechas of the Gundam franchise are on their way to Netflix. According to IGN, Netflix has just landed the distribution rights to Legendary’s long-in-the-works live-action Gundam movie. The studio has also recruited Kong: Skull Island helmer Jordan Vogt-Roberts to direct the film.

Legendary has been working on a Gundam film since at least 2019, when they enlisted Brian K. Vaughan to write the script and serve as an executive producer. There’s been virtually no word on the project since then, which makes Vogt-Roberts’ hiring a big step forward. This latest report also confirms that the studio is sticking with Vaughan’s draft. Legendary’s Cale Boyter and Netflix Original Film head Jason Young will oversee the movie’s development.

The Gundam franchise launched in Japan in 1979 with the premiere of the original animated series, Mobile Suit Gundam. Created by Japan’s Sunrise studio, the show set a bold new standard for all of the mecha-based anime series that came after it. In the years that followed, the Gundam brand has spawned many additional TV shows, manga books, and video games.

Gundam will mark Vogt-Roberts’ first feature since Kong: Skull Island hit theaters in 2017. Since then, he’s helmed several episodes of FX’s You’re the Worst. Before lending himself to Legendary’s MonsterVerse, he directed The Kings of Summer as well as Nick Offerman’s American Ham stand-up special.

Meanwhile, Vaughan currently has his hands full with upcoming adaptations of Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, and Paper Girls. He’s also spearheading a new Buck Rogers TV reboot for Legendary.
