Netflix to Produce Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead Prequel, Anime Series
It’s been a while since fans got some news from Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. The movie is still somewhere amidst production, and there is no news yet about when it will make it to Netflix beyond sometime in 2021. Nonetheless, the streaming service just announced its intention to expand the franchise. Not only is Zack Snyder’s forthcoming zombie movie getting a prequel, but also an anime series.
“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Netflix again as we expand the Army of the Dead universe with both an international prequel, as well as exploring the visually dynamic world of animation,” Snyder said in a statement (via Variety). “It’s been a great collaboration, and we are thrilled that Netflix sees this as big of an IP as we do.”
Several people involved in the Army of the Dead movie will also work on the related projects in the franchise. Besides the script for the upcoming zombie movie, writer Shay Hatten will pen the prequel and the anime series. Star Matthias Schweighöfer will play Ludwig Dieter in Snyder’s movie before directing the prequel — and acting in it.
The anime series goes by Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. It will focus on the origin story of Scott Ward, the man who recruits a group of mercenaries to pull off the ultimate heist amidst a zombie apocalypse in Army of the Dead. Dave Bautista will play Ward. Zack Snyder is expected to direct two episodes of the series.
Army of the Dead will hit Netflix somewhere in 2021. The streaming service has yet to announce a release date for the related projects.
