List of The Last of Us easter eggs and references in Season 2 finale

Here are some easter eggs and references to The Last of Us Part II game seen in the Season 2 finale;

  • In the episode, while Dina is sleeping, Ellie pushes her hair behind her ears. This moment is also present in the game but occurs after Ellie returns from the aquarium, where she had gone searching for Abby and ended up killing the latter’s friends, Owen and Mel.
  • Dina is seen in one scene cleaning several scrapes on Ellie’s back. The Last of Us Part II also features this moment.
  • Jesse and Ellie visit a bookstore at one point in the finale, something also seen in the game. In the show, the duo visits the place to meet Tommy. However, in the game, they pass by it in their search for Tommy and Abby. Additionally, both the game and the show depict a mural of Alice in Wonderland in the bookstore.
  • Ellie and Jesse end up splitting after their goals diverge — with the former wanting to continue her pursuit of Abby, while the latter wants to find Tommy. This moment happens in the game as well, but the show adds a slight change to how the situation plays out. In the show, before they go their separate ways, Ellie lambasts Jesse for being a hypocrite. She also tells him how she saw her community get beaten to death.
  • Like in the game, Ellie fatally shoots Owen. However, the manner of his death is slightly different in the show. In the show, Ellie shoots Owen after the latter reaches for his gun. In the game, Owen rushes at Ellie before she kills him.
  • As is the case with the game, Ellie kills a pregnant Mel. However, the show adds a unique scene of Mel asking Ellie to save her baby.
  • Abby and Ellie‘s confrontation at the theater is directly ripped from the game. Here, Ellie telling Abby her understanding of why the latter killed Joel plays out exactly like in the game.
