The Last of Us Showrunner on Who Is the Father of Mel’s Baby

While The Last of Us Season 2 finale has aired, the episode seems to have left viewers with more questions than answers.

One such mystery has to do with Ariela Barer’s Mel, who is revealed to be pregnant in the sequel season. This has caused many Last of Us fans to wonder who the father of Mel’s baby is on the show, leading co-showrunner Craig Mazin to come out and address the query himself.

In a recent discussion, Craig Mazin decided to play coy about the identity of the father of Mel’s baby, noting that even though Owen parents a child with Mel in The Last of Us games, that wouldn’t particularly be the case with the HBO series.

While talking about if Owen is the father of Mel’s baby during a press conference, Mazin said, “Well, that circumstance is from the game. Now, it’s a bit different in the show, in that we’re not quite sure who the father is. In the game, Owen is the father—we went a different way in the show.” (via The Direct)

As such, it remains unclear as to who the father of Mel’s baby is in The Last of Us Season 2. It won’t be surprising if the creators decide to deviate from the source material, having already done so in the follow-up edition. As per the games, Ellie terminates Mel and Owen in an act of self-defense, with Mel being the aggressor in their altercation. However, The Last of Us Season 2 shows Bella Ramsey’s Ellie shoot an advancing Owen, with the bullet also catching an unsuspecting Mel in the process. In her final moments, a pregnant Mel attempts to instruct Ellie to take her baby out of her womb before she passes away. While Ellie gives it her best shot, the episode ends with Owen, Mel, and Mel’s unborn child losing their lives.
