Cassian Andor‘s (Diego Luna) death is one of the most pivotal moments in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Cassian Andor dies in 1 BBY on Scarif after the Death Star fires on the planet. In Rogue One, Andor, a captain of the Alliance Intelligence, is assigned to retrieve Imperial scientist Galen Erso. This is because Erso was instrumental in the Death Star’s creation. He and K-2SO join forces with Jyn Erso, Galen’s daughter, raised by Rebel extremist Saw Gerrera following her father’s capture by the Empire.
Andor is secretly assigned to assassinate Galen by General Davits Draven. He keeps this information from Jyn, promising to help her free her father. He, Jyn, and K-2SO soon arrive at Eadu, where Galen is stationed at an Imperial laboratory.
Andor, however, ultimately chooses not to kill Galen, strongly motivated by his conflicted feelings on the matter. These emotions arose after Jyn told him that her father had deceived his superiors and secretly installed a flaw within the Death Star to aid in its destrutction. However, rebel reinforcements bomb the facility Galen is in, leading to his death.
Jyn and Andor later assemble a team named Rogue One to steal Death Star‘s plans from an Imperial base on Scarif. This team acts independently from the Rebel Alliance High Command because the latter rejected Jyn’s pleas to steal the Death Star plans.
Andor and Rogue One later request the Rebel Alliance fleet in Scarif’s orbit to disrupt the planetary shield, thus allowing them to transmit the plans to the fleet. Not long after, the Death Star comes and fires upon the Imperial base on the planet.
Andor and Jyn then walk to the shores, embracing each other as Scarif is destroyed and their lives are taken.
