The original Quantum Leap ran for five seasons on NBC before abruptly ending in 1993. However, the long-rumored comeback for the show is one step closer to reality. Deadline is reporting that NBC has ordered a pilot episode for a Quantum Leap reboot series.
In the original series, Scott Bakula starred as Dr. Sam Beckett, the creator of the Quantum Leap project. While testing his time travel machine, Sam was sent back to the past and compelled to live out episodes in the lives of other people in order “to put right what once went wrong.” The late Dean Stockwell played Sam’s friend, Al Calavicci, who communicated with Sam from the future in the form of a hologram. In the series finale, Sam changed the past to reunite Al with his first wife. However, Sam never made the final leap home to reunite with his own wife.
According to Deadline, the new series picks up 30 years after Sam’s disappearance. Without Sam or Al to guide them, a new team has revived the Quantum Leap project “in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.”
The report also notes that Bakula has had conversations about joining the new series in some capacity, but nothing is settled yet. Regardless, Quantum Leap creator Don Bellisario and Deborah Pratt are attached as executive producers alongside Martin Gero (Blindspot). However, the new series is being written La Brea co-showrunners Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt. Lilien and Wynbrandt will also be showrunners on the new Quantum Leap if it goes forward.
