Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Ming-Na Wen Discusses if Melinda May Could Return to the MCU

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Ming-Na Wen says Disney and Marvel Studios have yet to ask her to reprise Agent Melinda May in Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“No, they have not . . . it’s weird, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. sort of became a separate entity for whatever reason because it was on the network as opposed to streaming,” Wen said to Katee Sackhoff on The Sackhoff Show. “I think there’s some — and this is where my obliviousness also helps because I don’t understand it, so you’re asking the wrong person, I just know that there’s some sort of division.”

Produced by Jeph Loeb‘s Marvel Television, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted on ABC in 2013. The series followed Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) after he was mysteriously resurrected after his death at the hands of Loki in 2012’s The Avengers. Leading a team of elite S.H.I.E.L.D. agents including Agent May, Coulson and the team operated within the shadows of the MCU by handling strange cases and facing otherworldly threats. Despite lasting seven seasons on the air, Wen feels that Marvel Studios has overlooked S.H.I.E.L.D.’s success as it played a role in bringing small-screen MCU output to Disney+.

“We were the first, so you think we should get some accolade for helping launch Marvel in what the TV [department] that it is now,” Wen said.

While it is unknown if Marvel will ever call Wen to play Agent May in the MCU again, her co-star Gregg teased a potential Agent Coulson return because of the direction of the Multiverse Saga. “[Coulson isn’t dead] in every timeline,” Gregg said. “Look, you are playing in a Multiverse scenario in various timelines without you being like, ‘I don’t know, there’s many Multiverses here’ . . . People are very upset about whether things are canon [or not], and I love that Kevin [Feige] is like ‘The Oz.’”

Will Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. make a comeback?

Recently, Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum teased a possible S.H.I.E.L.D. revival following the success of X-Men ’97 on Disney+ and the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. “[Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.] is probably the next show that [we’re] going to kind of revisit and revive . . . a really strong . . . and one of my favorite pockets of our universe and our fandom,” Winderbaum said to Agents of Fandom on YouTube. “And . . . you never know is the answer!”

All seven seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are now streaming on Disney+.
