Catherine Zeta-Jones Joins Netflix’s Wednesday Series as Morticia Addams

Netflix’s Addams Family spinoff has just secured a big name to play the household’s gothic matriarch. The streamer has just revealed that Catherine Zeta-Jones is joining the cast of Wednesday as the title character’s mother, Morticia. Check out the announcement below.

Wednesday follows the Addams’ death-obsessed daughter as she pursues a higher education at Nevermore Academy. As she grapples with her developing psychic abilities, she will also find herself caught in the middle of a 25-year-old murder mystery that involved her parents. Jenna Ortega was chosen to play Wednesday back in May. And just last week, Luis Guzmán signed on to play her father, Gomez Addams.

Zeta-Jones is probably best known for her Oscar winning performance in Chicago in 2002 as well as her role as Elena in 1998’s The Mask of Zorro and its 2005 sequel. Earlier this year, she appeared in several episodes of Fox’s Prodigal Son. She previously acted with Guzmán in Traffic in 2000.

Needless to say, Zeta-Jones will have some big shoes to fill when she starts production on Wednesday. Carolyn Jones originated the role of Morticia in live action in the original Addams Family TV series in 1964. Decades later, Angelica Huston took over as the character in feature films released in 1991 and 1993. Daryl Hannah also took on the role in 1998’s Addams Family Reunion. Most recently, Charlize Theron provided Morticia’s voice in the animated Addams Family reboot.

Tim Burton is directing and executive producing Wednesday for Netflix. The first season will reportedly consist of eight episodes, but the streamer still hasn’t set a release date.
