In the build-up to the release of the Supergirl movie, executive producer Chantal Nong Vo has explained why the DCU movie features the big-screen debut of maverick bounty hunter Lobo (Jason Momoa). The Warner Bros. Discovery Executive VP, in a recent interview, noted that while the character does contribute to the story of the film, he also serves an additional purpose in the project.
Chantal Nong Vo explains Lobo’s addition to DCU’s Supergirl
The veteran producer stated that the team added Jason Momoa’s character to the cast in an attempt to introduce a chaotic element in the upcoming DCU movie.
“When we were developing the story, it was a very, ‘Go from A to B to C to D,'” Chantal Nong Vo said while speaking with Comic Book Resources. “We felt like, in a story like this, you generally want somebody to twist it up and change the game unexpectedly…We thought that (Lobo) could be a good character to be a game-changing scenario that’s dropped into the movie.”
Describing the decision to include Lobo as “story-driven,” the Supergirl EP added, “When you’re in space, and it’s a superhero movie, it might be hard to maintain the energy if you’re just playing it, ‘Go here, go here, go here, go here, fight some battles, et cetera.’ So anything that’s more unexpected – which, as you all know, Lobo is – I think makes a story more interesting.”
Nong Vo further elaborated, “Lobo is definitely, I would say, in the dark gray area. But it’s really interesting to have somebody who plays with the gray area when you have a Supergirl and a Ruthye, who are both going from black to white, white to black, et cetera. He’s got a code, and it’s just really interesting to see how it plays out.”
Notably, Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book run, which serves as the inspiration for the upcoming Craig Gillespie directorial venture, does not feature Lobo in any capacity. However, the DCU team’s insistence, combined with Jason Momoa’s enthusiasm in portraying the interstellar mercenary, ultimately resulted in Lobo joining the Supergirl movie’s lineup.
Led by Milly Alcock and also featuring David Corenswet’s Superman and Matthias Schoenart’s Krem of the Yellow Hills, Supergirl is on track to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
