Carol and Daryl’s Walking Dead Spinoff Will Be a ‘Road Show’

After 11 seasons, the sun is about to set on The Walking Dead’s flagship series. But the franchise’s name will live on through a handful of spinoff projects, including one headlined by two fan-favorite characters. It’s been nearly a month since AMC announced that Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus will reprise their roles as Carol and Daryl in a follow-up series after The Walking Dead ends. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Angela Kang offered new hints as to what this show will look like.

The Walking Dead’s focus essentially shifted to Daryl and Carol after Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes left the series in season 9. With that in mind, some fans think it’s redundant to give them their own show. However, Kang revealed that the pair will explore new corners of The Walking Dead’s universe rather than stay in one place for too long.

“They’re going to be off on a different journey,” said Kang. “And that show’s going to feel hopefully a little tonally fresh. They’re just in a different stage of their lives and it’s more of a road show, which I think will be really fun.”

Kang also shared that the Carol/Daryl spinoff was in the works long before AMC decided to conclude the main series. But even though the impending finale marks the end of one era, she’s excited for what the future holds.

“Obviously, I’ve been on the show almost since the beginning,” added Kang. “It’s been a huge part of my life and the lives of everybody that’s been there for many years. It’s a really bittersweet time. We love the show and there’s a lot of story to tell, which we’ll thankfully get many episodes ahead of us to make on air. But at the same time, I’m really excited to do more with Daryl and Carol. Those are two characters and two actors that I love writing for and working with, Norman and Melissa. So stuff to look forward to.”

“In the meantime, we’re just really focused on making the next 30 episodes we have yet to do — which is going to air for a couple of years — as great as they can be,” continued Kang.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC to finish up its 10th season this Sunday, October 4 on AMC.
