TNT’s Snowpiercer Showrunner Hopes for ‘Five or Six Seasons’
Seven years after Bong Joon-ho’s standalone movie, TNT debuted a brand new Snowpiercer series. The show has been received with mixed feelings by critics, but it seems that at least 3 million fans are enjoying the show. So far, TNT’s bet has turned out to be successful, given that the television network has already greenlighted a sophomore season of the show. In a recent interview with Collider, Snowpiercer showrunner Graeme Manson said that he pitched also the third season.
“You have a loose concept of three seasons, and an end point,” he said. “I pitched what an end point could be, and I pitched it as three very loose seasons. But as with Orphan Black, the middle can expand. You can keep the same end points and have it turn into five acts, or five seasons. It’s mostly about having an end point in mind, as well as an end point for the first season, and then who knows how long the middle will be.”
Manson went on to reveal his hopes for Mr. Wilford’s never-stopping train to run for more than just three seasons.
“It would be more about figuring out a Season 3 ending, whether it’s a cliffhanger to come back again, or not,” he said. “I’m not sure. The end point, that flagpole that we put up, hopefully moves down the road with more seasons. Or you stick to that end point and figure out a reboot of the characters and the train. I’m not sure what that would look like. There are as many Snowpiercer stories as there are, trains that you can imagine. I think it’s a franchise that you could reboot, in a different time, on a different train, or with a different cast. With this cast, let’s hope that we’re looking at five or six seasons.”
While it is still to be seen if the source material can be enough to expand the story for that many additional seasons, Snowpiercer can grow in popularity and enlarge his fanbase thanks to being streamed outside the US by Netflix.
The next episode of Snowpiercer airs June 7 on TNT.
