Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania almost featured a far less happy ending than the one included in its theatrical cut.
What was the original ending of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania?
Ahead of the Phase 5 movie’s release in 2023, a rumor emerged claiming that Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang/Ant-Man would die by the end of Quantumania. Ultimately, that never happened, with Scott making it out of the movie alive and happy.
However, trusted scooper Daniel Richtman has now revealed that the third Ant-Man movie did have a radically different ending than the one fans saw in theaters, which was reshot by Marvel Studios at the very last minute.
“While he wasn’t going to die, the original ending had Scott and Hope getting stuck in the Quantum Realm. They filmed a new ending just a few weeks before the movie was released. God knows why,” shared Richtman.
Based on Richtman’s description of the original Quantumania ending, it seems likely that Scott and Hope van Dyne/Wasp would have remained stuck in the Quantum Realm after destroying Kang the Conqueror by throwing him into the power core with the Pym Particles instead of returning through the portal that Scott’s daughter, Cassie, opened for them.
Quantumania wasn’t the hit Marvel Studios hoped it would be, with the movie quickly fizzling at the box office. While it managed to gross $476 million worldwide, its massive $330 million-plus budget made it one of the few Marvel Cinematic Universe movies not break even during its theatrical run.
With reports that Marvel has no plans for Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne and will be killing off Wasp off-screen in Avengers: Doomsday, the future looks bleak for the Ant-Family. MCU fans may have to get used to seeing just Rudd’s Scott Lang on the big screen, as he is the only Ant-Man character confirmed to be returning for Doomsday at this time.
All five MCU films starring Ant-Man are streaming on Disney+, while Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
