Marvel Studios’ long-awaited X-Men movie has received another update, teasing the MCU reboot’s potential filming start date and release date window.
Before the fan-favorite Marvel team finally gets its own movie in the MCU, some of the original cast members from the Fox X-Men franchise, including Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, will first return in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
When is the potential release date window for the MCU X-Men movie?
The latest rumor comes from insider Daniel Richtman, who claims that Marvel Studios is reportedly planning to start filming on its X-Men reboot movie after Avengers: Secret Wars wraps. Since Secret Wars is expected to complete its principal photography later this year, in September, this might mean that production on the MCU X-Men may potentially begin in early 2027. Should this happen, an early to mid-2028 theatrical release date is possible for the highly anticipated reboot. Interestingly, Marvel Studios currently has an untitled movie scheduled to debut on May 5, 2028.
Marvel Studios’ X-Men movie will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), with Michael Lesslie attached to write the screenplay. At the moment, the long-awaited project has no plot details, cast members, or official release date yet. In a previous interview, Schreier admitted that his 2025 Marvel movie will influence how he will direct the new X-Men movie.
“There are so many things that I didn’t know about before I started (Thunderbolts*). The biggest learning curve for me was the proportion of the action to the more emotional, character-driven scenes, and how, even though it’s more shooting days than I’ve ever had, they get eaten up quite quickly by the action stuff,” He said. “By the time we got to the end of it, it felt like, ‘Oh, now I feel like we get how to do this a little bit better.'”
