Superman’s Rachel Brosnahan has some words on actors who criticize superhero sequels — and superhero movies in general — after starring in one herself. The actress also addressed whether she’ll return for the possible Superman 2.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Amateur takes on the mantle of Lois Lane in James Gunn’s iteration of Superman. The upcoming movie, set to hit theaters on July 11, features David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
What did Rachel Brosnahan say about Superman 2 and superhero sequels?
In a conversation with Amanda Seyfried for Interview Magazine, Brosnahan and her fellow actress discussed their respective projects and their stand on movie sequels. Seyfried, who previously opened up about whether she’ll return for Jennifer’s Body 2, expressed her frustration about sequels, though admitted she’s willing to do “Mamma Mia! 3 in a heartbeat.”
When Seyfried asked Brosnahan if she’ll return for Gunn’s potential Superman sequel, Brosnahan responded: “Yeah, I’d come back. We had a great time. There’s also so many people in this cast who I didn’t get to work with.”
Later in the conversation, Brosnahan shared her opinion on actors who say yes to a superhero movie, only to have a change of heart afterward. For the actress, it’s either you do it or you don’t — and you have to stand by that decision.
“I don’t know why people say yes only to then turn around and complain about it. Look, I don’t want to shit on other actors, but there was a minute where it was cool to not like superhero movies and to look back on projects like this and pooh-pooh them. Do it or don’t do it, and then stand by it,” said Brosnahan.
According to Seyfried, Superman shouldn’t be called a superhero movie at all. “It isn’t just that, and I think people are going to see that. It’s really important to have this kind superhero, this guy who’s just trying to do his best.”
Brosnahan then revealed there’s more to Gunn’s Superman than what people expect, saying, “The cool thing about it is that it’s what you expect, and then there’s more. Of course, there’s great fighting and stunts and big monsters and good and evil.”
Superman also stars Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., and more.
“In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind,” the logline reads.
Superman will be released in US theaters and IMAX on July 11, 2025.
