With Marvel Studios‘ officially retitling Thunderbolts* as The New Avengers, Bucky Barnes actor Sebastian Stan has been spotted replacing posters with the new title.
What is the new title for Thunderbolts*?
Ever since Marvel Studios added an asterisk to the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, fans had speculated that Thunderbolts was being used as a placeholder title. Many even correctly theorized that the movie would end with the titular team being rebranded as the new Avengers lineup.
At the end of Thunderbolts*, the team goes to apprehend Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, only to end up at a makeshift press conference, where de Fontaine announces them as the New Avengers. Following the movie’s opening weekend, Marvel Studios has begun to rebrand Thunderbolts*’ marketing materials as The New Avengers, employing Stan to help out with the many poster changes.
Shared by DiscussingFilm on X, a video has come out showing Stan rolling out a Bucky Barnes character poster for The New Avengers overtop of the old Thunderbolts* one at a bus stop. The video can be viewed below.
The New Avengers — consisting of Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell‘s John Walker/U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen‘s Ava Starr/Ghost, and Lewis Pullman’s Bob/Sentry — will be part of Avengers: Doomsday, which begun filming at the end of April. The post-credits scene from Thunderbolts* was actually filmed on the Doomsday set by the Russo Brothers. This implies that the new costumes worn by the team in the scene will be their outfits for the upcoming crossover movie.

The post-credits scene also teased some internal conflict between Bucky Barnes and Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Captain America, who was confirmed at the end of Captain America: Brave New World to be putting together his own Avengers lineup. With the threat of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom looming on the horizon, the two Avengers teams will likely need to put aside their differences to come together to take on the MCU’s latest big bad.
Thunderbolts*, a.k.a. The New Avengers, is now playing in theaters.
