Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s main villain has been spoiled. Now that we know who they are, though, we know they have some absolutely huge implications on the MCU’s future.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed the MCU film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was released in 2021. The movie will once again be led by Tom Holland as he reprises his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Emmy winner Zendaya and Jacob Batalo are also expected to return for the sequel. They will be joined by cast members Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear), Jon Bernthal, and Tillman, among others.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s villain will have major implications on the future of the MCU
In a funny but unfortunate moment, musician Steve Lacy accidentally spoiled who would be the main villain in Brand New Day. While at the premiere, Lacy let it slip Sadie Sink plays none other than Jean Grey, the iconic X-Men member. While Sink’s role as Grey has been one of the worst kept secrets over the past few months, Lacy confirming the news made it official, and also let it slip that she is the villain of the movie.
“Jean. I like Jean. She’s the villain, but there’s a reason to her madness. I like her. I like her character,” Lacy said. Of course, news of Grey being the villain in a movie goes against how we normally view her. However, her inclusion in the MCU period means that she’ll likely begin to have some major implications on the future of the movie franchise.
For one, Grey is one of the most powerful entities in all of Marvel’s canon. From a purely character standpoint, there are few who rival what Grey is capable of, especially once you start talking about the help of the Phoenix Force. Besides that, Grey’s inclusion in the MCU means that Marvel Studios is fully ramping up for its post-Secret Wars future, and that will likely begin with one of the biggest groups in Marvel’s history.
It’s no secret that Marvel Studios has been developing an X-Men movie. What we didn’t know, though, was who was going to be in it. With Sink playing the role of Grey, we know of at least one member of the mutant team. What we don’t know, though, is what type of role she’ll play in the future X-Men franchise.
One thing is clear, though, and that’s that she’ll likely have a major role in whatever happens. Grey is one of the biggest characters in Marvel’s history, and one that will likely be at the forefront of anything Marvel Studios does moving forward, making her inclusion in Brand New Day all the more exciting.
