Spider-Man: No Way Home Almost Saw Doctor Strange and Peter Visit Garfield and Maguire’s Worlds

Spider-Man: No Way Home nearly saw Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Peter Parker (Tom Holland) chase one another through classic scenes from Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s separate Spider-Man universes.

Phil Saunders, a concept artist who worked on Spider-Man: No Way Home, shared some artwork and details for the scrapped idea on ArtStation. “One early idea for Spidey and Dr. Strange’s chase through the multiverse was to have them battle over the source of the spell (in this early version the Book of Vishanti) through scenes from the previous movies,” Saunders wrote.

“We were given a couple of days to play with that idea, taking screen caps from the movies and painting in Spidey and Doc,” the artist continued. “I liked the idea of taking the familiar shots and shifting the gravity and POV so that the characters would be in a completely different orientation than the action.”

Saunders’ concept art work shows Doctor Strange and Peter fighting one another in familiar Spider-Man locations, including Bonesaw McGraw’s wrestling cage from 2002’s Spider-Man, the clock tower from 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and more.

A fourth Spider-Man movie is currently in the works

Spider-Man: No Way Home was released in theaters in the United theaters on December 17, 2021. Directed by Jon Watts and written by Chris McKenna and Erick Sommers, the movie also stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Benedict Wong, Marisa Tomei, and Tony Revolori.

A fourth Spider-Man movie from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures is currently in the works. Plot details remain under wraps at this time, though producer Amy Pascal previously said the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home “gives us a lot to work with for the next film.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently streaming on Starz and DIRECTV.
