Zack Snyder: Comic Book Movies Are a ‘Cyclical Thing’

SnyderCon 2023 contained a Q&A session with Zack Snyder to cap off a Man of Steel theatrical screening. During this panel, Snyder spoke about the cyclical nature of comic book movies.

How does Zack Snyder feel about comic book movies?

At one point in the segment, Snyder described how he approached making comic book movies of iconic characters. The director then delved into the “cyclical” nature of comic book movies, acknowledging that his Superman will be far from the last.

“My intention was not to necessarily have a definitive or certain take, but it was just that I had the thing I thought would be cool. And that’s all it is,” Snyder explained. “Because look … we all know what’s going to happen. There’ll be another Superman and Batman origin film — even then the one that’s being talked about right now, there’ll be one after that. It is a cyclical thing … so that’s cool and I’m happy to be .. the third in the series of a thousand, so it’s fine.”

Zack Snyder directed multiple comic book movies even prior to his work in the DC Extended Universe. The Snyder-directed 2006 movie 300 was loosely based on the comic of the same name, while 2009’s Watchmen was based on Alan Moore’s seminal comic. Snyder would then direct Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, principal photography for Justice League, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League in the DCEU.
