Director Lee Cronin Celebrates the First Day of Filming For Evil Dead Rise

Last month, word broke that the new Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Rise, is coming exclusively to HBO Max. Now, writer and director Lee Cronin has shared the news that filming has already begun.

Cronin posted an update on his Twitter account with a photo of clapperboard from Day 1 in New Zealand. It’s not a first look at the cast, but that’s bound to come down the line.

Like the Evil Dead reboot from 2013 (pictured above), Evil Dead Rise will not have Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams in the lead. However, Campbell and director Sam Raimi will remain attached as executive producers. Original producer, Robert Tapert, will also executive produce the sequel.

Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings) and Lily Sullivan (Picnic At Hanging Rock) will star in the film as a pair of estranged sisters. Regardless of their issues with each other, the sisters will be menaced “by the rise of flesh-possessing demons.” The sisters will also “face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.”

Evil Dead Rise will hit HBO Max in the United States, but it may also be released theatrically in countries that don’t have HBO Max. There is no official release date at this time.
