Bad Boys for Life Directors Will Helm the Batgirl Movie

The directors behind 2020’s highest-grossing movie are about to leave their mark on the DC Universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bad Boys For Life helmers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will direct Warner Bros.’ long-gestating Batgirl film.

Warner Bros. began developing a standalone Batgirl movie in 2017. The studio originally hired Joss Whedon to write and direct the film, but he left the project a year later. Eventually, Birds of Prey and The Flash screenwriter Christina Hodson was brought on to revise the script.

The report also confirms that the studio is planning Batgirl as an HBO Max exclusive. This means whoever stars in the film won’t be the only live-action Barbara Gordon showing up on the platform in the near future. The next season of Titans will also introduce Savannah Welch as its own version of the character, who’s now Gotham City’s police commissioner.

Kristin Burr has also joined the movie as a producer, and shared her excitement in a new statement:

‘With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham,” said Burr. “Christina’s script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I’m just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool.”

After making waves with Bad Boys For Life last year, El Arbi and Fallah segued over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to co-showrun Ms. Marvel for Disney+. The pair also directed the pilot episode and the season finale, which wrapped shooting just a few weeks ago. Right now, El Arbi and Fallah are helming a new drama called Rebel. They’re also still attached to direct Beverly Hills Cop 4 for Netflix.

Warner Bros. still hasn’t set a release date for Batgirl.
