Taika Waititi Calls Thor: Love and Thunder ‘The Best Marvel Film Ever’

In 2017, Taika Waititi delivered one of the most unique MCU movies with Thor: Ragnarok. Following Waititi’s Oscar win for Jojo Rabbit’s screenplay, expectations for Thor: Love and Thunder have risen even higher. But as production on the film winds down, Waititi has the utmost confidence in what his cast and crew have come up with.

Waititi discussed the sequel’s progress during a recent appearance on Australia’s Weekend Today (via CBR). With just over a year to go until its release, he promised that fans won’t be disappointed in the movie.

“We’ve got four weeks left, I can see light at the end of the tunnel,” said Waititi. “It might be the best Marvel film ever.”

Love and Thunder marks Chris Hemsworth’s fourth solo outing as Thor. That makes Thor the first MCU hero to make it past the four Avengers movies and his own standalone trilogy. Thankfully, Waititi sounds more than willing to spend some extra time with Marvel’s God of Thunder.

“[Thor] is a funny guy,” added Waititi. “He’s a good friend and he’s also someone that you just want to hang out with all the time. And I think that’s all you really want from a superhero or a main character in your movie.”

Unlike Ragnarok, which was co-written by Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, and Christopher Yost, Waititi penned Love and Thunder’s script with some help from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Production began in Australia in January, with Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman also reprising their earlier Thor roles as Valkyrie and Jane Foster, respectively.

Additionally, the film will introduce several new characters like Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher and Russell Crowe’s Zeus. Actors from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series, including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff, will appear as well.

Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
