Expect Barry Allen to experience some heavy-handed family drama when The Flash hits theaters next year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maribel Verdú has joined the film’s cast as Barry’s mother, Nora.
DC continuity is always in flux. However, one thing that hasn’t changed since 2009’s The Flash: Rebirth series is that Nora Allen is long dead. As most fans know by now, The Reverse-Flash went back in time and murdered Nora, before leaving Barry’s father, Henry, to take the rap and face a lengthy prison sentence. Our first guess is that the movie will feature a flashback to Barry’s childhood. But since the film is reportedly taking cues from the Flashpoint storyline, it’s possible that Barry will travel back in time to prevent her death, only to create an alternate reality in the process. Originally, Billy Crudup was also going to reprise his Justice League role as Henry Allen in The Flash. Unfortunately, THR notes that he was forced to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts with Apple TV+’s The Morning Show.

Verdú is best known for her work in Spanish cinema. Her breakthrough came in 2001 when she was featured in Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también. She later appeared in Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth in 2006. More recently, she starred on the Spanish-language Netflix series You Cannot Hide.
Andy Muschietti is directing The Flash from a screenplay by Christina Hodson. Earlier this week, it was also confirmed that Kiersey Clemons will reprise her role from Zack Snyder’s Justice League as Iris West. Production on the film is expected to begin in England next month.
The Flash will hit theaters on November 4, 2022.
