Mondo Brings Mark Mothersbaugh’s Thor: Ragnarok Score to Vinyl
The music of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to get spiffy vinyl pressings courtesy of Mondo. The company has just announced that Thor: Ragnarok will be the latest installment in its Marvel Studios soundtrack series.
To compose Ragnarok’s score, director Taika Waititi turned to Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh. Waititi previously said he would have asked Queen to handle the film’s music if Freddie Mercury were still alive. But fortunately, Mothersbaugh didn’t disappoint. His synth-heavy contributions to the sequel wound up providing the perfect backdrop for Thor, Hulk, and Valkyrie’s odyssey across the cosmos.
Mondo recruited Yuta Onoda to create the soundtrack’s artwork. The cover features Thor and Hulk surrounded by larger-than-life renderings of Hela, Loki, and Valkyrie. Gracing the inside is an illustration of the film’s heroic trio charging the giant wolf Fenris during the final battle on the Bifröst Bridge. The soundtrack retails for $35 and will be pressed on two 180-gram LPs. Fans have three variants to choose from: neon swirl vinyl, “Thor vs. Hulk” vinyl, or standard black vinyl.
Additionally, Mondo is offering a Ragnarok-themed turntable slipmat designed by Dan Hipp that costs $12 and should complement the soundtrack nicely. Collectors can similarly purchase two new enamel pins designed by Matt Taylor that cost $10 each and capture Loki and Korg in profile. Taylor also recently collaborated with Mondo on a new screen-printed poster for Avengers: Endgame, which went onsale today.
Mondo kicked off its Marvel soundtrack series back in April with Christophe Beck’s Ant-Man and the Wasp score. They followed this up in September with a pressing of Ludwig Göransson’s Oscar-winning music from Black Panther.
The soundtrack, slipmat, and enamel pins will be available to order on Mondo’s website tomorrow at noon CT. You can have a look at the new merch in the gallery below, then tell us what you think in the comment section!
