Sabrina the Teenage Witch Holiday Special Reveals First Look at Young Hilda and Zelda

Archie Comics has revealed another sneak peek at December’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch Holiday Special #1, which offers a first look at the flashback story starring Sabrina Spellman’s aunts.

Today, The Beat debuted three uncolored preview pages from “A Very Spellman Solstice,” writer Danielle Paige and artist Veronica Johnson’s backup story from Sabrina the Teenage Witch Holiday Special #1. The outlet has also shared Johnson’s design sheet featuring the younger versions of Hilda and Zelda Spellman, as well as their friends Diana and Edward.

Check out the first-look preview for “A Very Spellman Solstice” below:

“I’m a huge history buff, so easily the most fun I had with this comic was coming up with designs for Hilda and Zelda that were 1990s-themed,” Johnson said. “I’m sure a lot of people my age associate Sabrina with the sitcom, and this story takes place during the era in which that aired. I think overall this story is a lot less focused on the magic aspects of Sabrina and more on fleshing out the adult characters and their backstories, and I feel that’s what makes it special and unique. Danielle wrote some amazing character interactions, and they were a lot of fun to draw.”

Sabrina the Teenage Witch Holiday Special #1 is a magical reunion

Kelly Thompson, Veronica Fish, and Andy Fish headline Sabrina the Teenage Witch Holiday Special #1 with “The Longest Night.” Set during the Winter Solstice, this new story takes place in the same continuity as Thompson and the Fishes’ Sabrina the Teenage Witch series from 2019. The Beat recently debuted a first-look preview for that story as well.

“Going back to Sabrina’s world, getting to work with Kelly and the Archie team is truly something special. These kinds of opportunities are rare, and I’m very grateful for them; I’m going to do my best to bring Kelly’s script and the character to life!” Veronica Fish said.

“I wanted to add in some little details from the first story arc, including Sabrina’s leather backpack, photos of Salem and the Aunts, and a poster of the Queen of Wands tarot card in her dorm room,” the artist continued. “I don’t know if students today even use paper calendars (or Post-Its) anymore, but I thought it would be fun to have bits of student life in there, too, like a laptop and mug of pens at her desk.”

Sabrina the Teenage Witch Holiday Special #1 goes on sale Wednesday, December 13 from Archie Comics. The issue features a main cover by Veronica Fish and a variant cover by Laura Braga.
