Batman: Arkham City is 4-5 Times Bigger Than Asylum

September 05, 2010

And you'll have double the number of moves

Last week saw the release of numerous screenshots from Batman: Arkham City and now there are also new quotes from Rocksteady Studios' Efton Hill about the anticipated game, coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in fall 2011.

Hill told CVG that the game is "four or five times" bigger than Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman will have double the number of moves as his disposal this time.

"Without a doubt, the hardest part of moving the game setting from the confines of the asylum into the urban sprawl of Arkham City was simply building the environment," he said.

"Our objective in this game is not to make the biggest game we can, but to make the best game possible. Gamers who played 'Batman: Arkham Asylum' will know how dedicated we are as a studio to injecting an incredible amount of detail into every environment we build.

"It is this attention to detail that gives our games the deep and intense atmosphere that so many players have found so compelling, and so we have had to seriously scale up our art team in order to bring the same level of detail to Arkham City, which is about 4-5 times bigger than 'Arkham Asylum.'"

He added that players will get a sense of continuity from the end of Batman: Arkham Asylum as you will begin Batman: Arkham City with many of the same core gadgets that you unlocked in the first game.

This Game Will Rock
The first game rocked, this one will rock, and they really have honest to goodness room for a third depending on story. If you'll remember... not all the bad guys were locked back up at the end of AA and that still needs to be done. I really hope we see a physical version of The Riddler at some point.

Arkham City vs. Gotham City
I wondered why they couldn't call it Gotham City, also. But the truth is, a city is a big place and they do have to confine the character somehow. This format lets us explore Gotham and it gives us an explanation as to why we can't go outside of the playable area.

Another reason to call it Arkham City as opposed to Gotham City is that many people refer to the last game as "Arkham Asylum". Calling it Arkham City shows it is a sequel that has expanded upon the first game.

The main reason it's called Arkham City is literally because it's a sectioned-off portion of Gotham confined as a prison camp run by the Arkham name. After the first game, Warden Quicy Sharp claimed most of the fame from the Joker's takeover and used it to campaign for mayor. He wins, thus approving his long-awaited plans to create Gotham's slums into the "Arkham City". For those who found out the "Spirit of Amadeaus Arkham" mystery, we know Sharp has got some skeletons in his closet (to say the least). He'll most likely be confronted by Batman by the end of the game.

Oh yeah, Sharp has place Hugo Strange as head of the camp! A big uh-oh!

Mr. freeze
Though Mr. Freeze may not be a villain in the new Batman movies, He could pose a great threat to Batman in this game (or a possible third) And i'd love to see Ra's Al Ghul.
