Mark Ruffallo Wouldn't Have Done Avengers in the Past

August 28, 2010

What Downey Jr. has done and where the genre has gone convinced him

Mark Ruffalo told the Sunday Herald Sun (via What's Playing) that he wouldn't have done a movie like The Avengers in previous years.

"I probably wouldn't have done this movie in the past. But because of what Robert [Downey Jr] had done and where that genre has gone since then, I did it."

Ruffalo, a fan of "The Incredible Hulk" TV show, says he's a bit wary at the prospect of the green screen acting and the barrage of special effects he'll be acting alongside when filming starts next year. He's not taking on The Hulk for the money though.

"I have never really been one to go for the cash. If my dad knew how much money I had turned in my lifetime he would kick me in the a—."

The Avengers hit theaters on May 4, 2012.

This is gonna turn into another "I want Norton back/Ruffallo sucks" debate.

Norton is not gonna be in the film, deal with it. And it wasn't like it was only Marvel's fault, both parties are to blame here, he obviously wanted more money/control/screen time, whatever, and since he didn't get it, he bailed out, so it's not "Oh poor Ed Norton, he really wanted to be in this film but he didn't get to because of the evil company who didn't give in to his demands". If he did, he would be doing it, like Robert Downey Jr is doing it, like Sam Jackson is doing it, and everyone else who had the decency to sing up for the whole 9 picture deal from the start. Except Norton.

Norton is a fool
My personal opinion is that Norton may well be intellectual and brilliant but he has "shot himself in the foot" here. Why? Well because regardless of how much airtime/star factor HUlk/Banner would have had in the movie what Marvel is doing here is nothing short of historic in cinematic terms - i.e. the weaving together of a range of characters and story-arcs from different films into one big team finale.

On the other hand the fact that Norton is less of a team player also worked because this is exactly what Banner/Hulk is. Ultimately a shame but it's happened this way so we have to deal with it. Though one last interesting factor does spring to mind and that is that Hulk, throughout his comic-history, has experienced more multiple personalities than probably any other hero (Grey Hulk, Smart Hulk, Mr. Fixit, Hulk Smash. It seems this is being replicated here outside the comic-books.

"Serious actors" normally tick me off. I have believed very few actors who claim this label as being very honest. Most of them to say they are not in it for the money is a joke.

That said, who am I to judge why Ruffallo took this job? Do I want Norton back? Mostly, but such s life.
