The Authority Film in the Works?

August 23, 2010

Stana Katic may be slated to star in the potential Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch adaptation

The Authority may be headed to the big screen, according to a post on comic book artist Dean Haspiel's Live Journal (via WarrenEllis.com).

Haspiel, who provided illustrations for HBO's television series "Bored to Death," posted a detailed entry about his trip to the Creative Arts Emmy Awards and his subsequent win for Outstanding Title Design. Haspiel revealed that, in a conversation with "Castle" actress Stana Katic, he was told that she was in talks for a film version of "The Authority."

Created in 1999 by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, "The Authority" is a DC comic book about a superhero team in the Wildstorm universe. The original roster included previous Ellis creations Apollo, Midnighter, The Doctor, Engineer, Swift, Jenny Sparks and Jack Hawksmoor. It is unknown what role Katic may be under consideration for.

Furthering the mystery is Ellis' own response. Though he claims that he isn't aware of plans to develop his series into a feature film, he posted the following today on his blog:

"I don’t own THE AUTHORITY, and DC are certainly not compelled to tell me about anything regarding the book.

What an odd thing."

As the property is owned by DC Comics, a film version would most likely be in development at Warner Bros., though nothing is certain at this time.

Not Happening
Definitely not happening. They won't do the romance between two men (Midnighter and Apollo) or the ultra violence and language that pepper the series. Its by far one of the most interesting, deep superhero books I've read, which means it either won't happen or it will be dumbed down for Hollywood. If anything pick up the early books and enjoy them, and forget a movie.

I would have to agree with bgm (big giant man?). I really doubt that mainstream hollywood, even now would be ready to do a story about two openly gay superheroes. as well, if I remember my Authority comics correctly (it's been a while) their main villians will mostly big corporations and the corruption of government by capitalism. Again, eventhough I liked Authority and pretty much agreed with its politics, I would be super surprised if hollywood could bring itself to be faithful to the spirit of the comic.

NO! i bet no studio wanted something so controversial and ultra violent as THE AUTHORITY, midnighter may be cool, but the whole gay relationship an profanity sure make an R-rated movie, which means, not much $$$ for the studio.

There's no way they will keep this movie anywhere close to the source material.
