Square Enix’s Avengers Won’t Be an Open World Game

Earlier this week, Square Enix revealed its Avengers game for the world to see. However, players shouldn’t expect another massive open world to rival the one in Spider-Man PS4. While speaking with Eurogamer, lead designer Phillipe Therien and senior producer Rose Hunt broke down what the game has to offer. Avengers may not have a free-flowing world, but there won’t be a shortage of things to do.

“The game isn’t open world,” confirmed Therien. “There’s way too many different places to explore for that to have made sense. We’re looking at having different kinds of regions where you can go from place to place. The Avengers are effective worldwide and we wanted to show that.”

“And we wanted the game to have world stakes, so instead of just one city, we want to take you to different places around the world,” added Therien.

On top of that, the team reiterated the ability to play the game in co-op. With this, two Avengers can work together in a level, taking on bad guys and working together to clean house.

“Some of that comes from balancing the characters against each other, the enemies and the environments being more catered to one hero or another,” continued Therien. “You’ll have situations where one hero can shine against another but that doesn’t mean someone will feel underpowered at any point. You’ll see those moments where they might be a window to exploit it and when you do you feel really good – you feel like, that’s what my character would have done. That’s how we go about it.”

Avengers will launch on May 15, 2020 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
