David DeLuise has criticized Selena Gomez‘s Wizards Beyond Waverly Place after its finale aired. The original Wizards of Waverly Place star believes the ending should have given the Russo family a bigger role.
DeLuise played Jerry Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place from 2007 to 2012. The actor shared his reaction in an Instagram comment after Tuesday’s four-part finale. He wrote, “It would not be over if the OG wizards were really there. Missed opportunity.” The comment has received more than 1,100 likes.
DeLuise reprised his role as Jerry Russo in two episodes of the revival series. But the finale focused more on Justin Russo (played by David Henrie) and the new generation of wizards.
For the unversed, Gomez returned as Alex Russo in several episodes. She also served as executive producer and directed the first episode of the four-part finale. Meanwhile, Jennifer Stone returned as Harper Finkle, and Gregg Sulkin appeared again as Mason Greyback.
How did the other cast react to the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place finale?
Selena Gomez opened up about her feelings on ending her character of Alex Russo. She told Entertainment Tonight, “It’s really surreal to say that I’m done playing this character.”
Gomez also confirmed that the final scene with her character appeared along with Stone’s character. She said, “I did my last scene as Alex, and she did her last scene as Harper together, which could not have been better.”
As for Stone, she shared her thoughts too. “It felt like saying goodbye to your teenage self. Like going back as an adult, giving your teenage self a hug, and then letting them go.”
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place premiered in 2024 as a sequel to the Disney Channel hit. The series follows an adult Justin Russo, who has left magic behind to build a normal life with his wife, Giada, and their sons, Roman and Milo. When a powerful young wizard enters his life, Justin is drawn back into the magical world.
Disney has not confirmed another season. As of now, the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place finale appears to be the end of the Russo family’s latest story.
