Spider-Man: Freshman Year Gets New Title

Marvel Studios officially unveiled a new title for its upcoming animated series, Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

At a press screening for the first two episodes of What If…? Season 2, Marvel announced that Freshman Year had been renamed Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. No reason was given for the title change.

The studio also revealed that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man would drop onto Disney+ in 2024, along with two additional animated series — X-Men ’97, a continuation of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series, and Eyes of Wakanda, which will be tied to the Black Panther franchise.

What is Marvel’s animated Spider-Man series about?

When Spider-Man: Freshman Year was initially announced in November 2021, Marvel Studios shared that the animated series would follow Peter Parker on his to becoming Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leading many fans to believe that the show would take place before the events of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.

However, in July 2022, Marvel clarified that the series would take place in an alternate timeline in the MCU, with Norman Osborn replacing Tony Stark as Peter’s mentor. A second season, then titled Sophomore Year, was also announced.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will feature several characters that have not yet appeared in the MCU, as well as some fan favorites. On the villain side, Spider-Man will come face-to-face with Unicorn, Chameleon, Scorpion, Speed Demon, Tarantula, the Rhino, Butane, Carmela Black, and Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus.
