Ryan Reynolds’ Response To The Odyssey Beating Deadpool & Wolverine Is Peak Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds congratulated Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey on social media for surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

Reynolds posted a 36-second video on Instagram and X combining footage from both films. He captioned the post, “Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car.”

The “car” joke references the Honda Odyssey minivan, which features prominently in Deadpool & Wolverine. Deadpool famously declares the minivan “not a car” before he and Wolverine tear each other apart inside it. The clip plays on the shared name, pairing Matt Damon trekking through a forest as Odysseus with the chaotic minivan brawl.

The Odyssey currently sits at approximately $1.34 billion worldwide, per industry reports (via World of Reel). Deadpool & Wolverine finished its 2024 theatrical run at $1.338 billion worldwide. The two films reached similar totals through very different audience splits. Deadpool & Wolverine drew 47.6 percent of its gross domestically, while The Odyssey has earned 60.6 percent internationally.

The Odyssey also cost significantly less to produce. Universal made the film for a reported $250 million budget. In contrast, Disney spent a reported $537 million on production and marketing for Deadpool & Wolverine. Meanwhile, Nolan’s film has already become the biggest of his career, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises at $1.08 billion.

Beyond that, The Odyssey still has major markets left to play. China opened on August 14 across more than 20,000 screens. Additionally, Japan does not open until September 11. Domestically, the film crossed $500 million in its fifth weekend on a 27 percent drop. As a result, Reynolds’ fans are already pushing for a fourth Deadpool film to reclaim the record.
