HBO has debuted a new trailer for His Dark Materials, featuring a glimpse at the trouble that lies ahead for young Lyra Belacqua. Dafne Keen (Logan) stars as Lyra, a young girl in a world where people are accompanied by daemons which hold part of their souls. Lyra is soon drawn into a mystery involving the disappearance of her friend and multiple realities. But she’s more than capable of searching for answers and discovering the truth about her world.
The extended trailer features a look at several characters including James McAvoy’s Lord Asriel and Ruth Wilson’s Marisa Coulter. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Lee Scoresby also appears, as does Lyra’s companion – an armored polar bear. His name is Iorek Byrnison, and he’s prominently featured in the trailer as well.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this summer, series writer Jack Thorne explained HBO’s approach to the series.
“This is an anti-superhero story, in that if this was a superhero story you’d be following the Lord Asriel part,” said Thorne. “There’s people that are seeking greatness in this story, and there are people that are following their own goodness. And the thing I love about Lyra is she is constantly following the path of the good. I really believe that we should be following our goodness right now and we aren’t getting distracted by greatness.”
His Dark Materials will premiere on HBO on November 4.
