Marvel Studios has revealed exactly why British actor David Jonsson is inheriting the mantle of Black Panther. The decision, confirmed during San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H presentation, will have Jonsson as T’Challa II in the upcoming Black Panther 3, slated for release in 2028.
Sarah Finn explains why David Jonsson was cast as the new Black Panther
Marvel’s long-serving casting director Sarah Finn has shed light on the thinking behind one of the studio’s most major casting decisions. Speaking to Variety, Finn emphasised that technical skill alone would not suffice for such a symbolic role. “[David] has a lot of talent and a whole lot of heart,” Finn said. “Obviously, these are very big shoes to fill. He is the grown version of [T’Challa’s son], and the heir apparent. We needed somebody not only with the talent, but with a certain presence and a certain spirit.”
That search for presence and spirit defined the casting process. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed that director Ryan Coogler identified Jonsson before any formal search had begun. Coogler met privately with the actor while finishing work on Sinners and immediately contacted Feige. “I found him. He’s the guy,” Coogler told Feige, who recalled the director saying, “He’s the guy. I felt it. I felt it in my soul. He’s a good man, and he is the next Black Panther.” Feige admitted the conversation moved him. “I got chills, and I got a little welled up,” he said.
Jonsson’s casting continues the approach established in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which chose not to recast Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa. Instead, the franchise will follow his son, now grown, allowing the story to move forward while respecting Boseman’s legacy. The 32-year-old actor brings a considerable resume to the role. He won the BAFTA Rising Star Award for his performance in Alien: Romulus and has received acclaim for work in Rye Lane, HBO’s Industry, and The Long Walk.
